Matt Scher_Olivet Broadcaster.jpg

Matt Scher is an experienced sportscaster in a variety of sports. He recently completed his undergraduate degree at Olivet College in Michigan in December 2020. Scher majored in Journalism and Mass Communications with a focus on sportscasting. His vision of becoming a sportscaster started at a young age. Ever since Scher could talk, he was noted as a kid who had an affinity for the English language, eventually setting his aspirations of becoming a professional sports commentator. Growing up, the Lutz, Florida native would listen to his father tell stories of the late Detroit Tigers' broadcaster Ernie Harwell, which drove Scher toward this passion of painting a picture through word of mouth. His goal was set on becoming a reliable voice that listeners can count on to see the game through his use of imagery, captivating listeners with each inflection in his speech. His passion and drive for sportscasting has shown through his dedication of his college studies to the craft in hopes to lead to an eventual career path in the field. During his time at Olivet College, Scher found himself on the airwaves in

his first month on campus in September 2015, calling play-by-play for the Olivet College football team for their home game against Aurora University. Since that first broadcast, Scher served as the lead play-by-play voice of Olivet Athletics for a little over half a decade and provided many memorable calls throughout his time in the western part of Eaton County. In 2016, Scher was behind the mic for the football program's first outright conference title since 1974 and would call the second playoff game in school history. He would also make his debut as the host of The Comet Football Update, the weekly coach and player show for the football team, going in-depth with coaches and players after each game and previewing the next week's game. Scher would also call the men's basketball conference championship run in 2018 for their first title since 1973. He has also worked in the booth for both baseball and softball, schedule permitting as a member of the school's baseball team. In 2019, Scher accepted a position as a broadcast intern with the Detroit Tigers. Some of his responsibilities included assisting the Director of Broadcasting with the day-to-day operations within both the broadcasting and in-game entertainment departments and assisting the team's radio broadcasters during games with stats, research and in-game reads. Scher is looking forward to his next opportunity to throw on the headset and paint the picture for a new group of listeners, hoping to connect with them the way Ernie Harwell connected with many through their transistor radios and deliver memories for a new generation of sports fans.
